About ACE Trains

ACE Trains have established their products as the most desirable and collectable O gauge model trains available today – faithful to time honoured traditions of craftsmanship and attention to detail, which were established in the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

History

In 1955, the English Electric company produced a prototype diesel locomotive at the Dick, Kerr & Co works in Preston, officially named the DP1 but commonly known as Deltic, this prototype experimentally used two Napier Deltic engines which had been developed for marine applications. These unconventional 2 stroke diesel engines were configured in a triangle with an opposed piston design. They ran at high speed (1,500 RPM) more than twice that of conventionally configured engines, which made them very powerful relative to their size and weight, compared to the conventional diesel engines of the era. The locomotive used two of these engines, both rated at 1,650 horsepower, which gave the locomotive a combined power output of 3,300 horsepower for a weight of 106 tons.

The prototype was used extensively on the west coast main line (WCML) for some years before the decision was made to electrify the WCML.

At that time the east coast main line (ECML), management were looking for a replacement for their ageing fleet of Gresley Pacific's being unimpressed with the various 2,000 horsepower mainline diesels in operation at that time that were no better in timings than the existing steam locos, therefore this loco was tested and a decision made to use this loco in an externally modified format.

In 1958 twenty two of these locos were ordered to replace the work at that time of over 100 ex LNER Pacific's.

The resulting acceleration of the timetable using these locos enabled an hour to be removed from the timetable from Kings X to Edinburgh.

There are presently eight of the original twenty two production locos in preservation and also the original prototype.
